Do It!

Sooner
or later everyone who owns a computer wants to take a peek under the
hood. Lots of people want to open up the box and touch things just
to see what makes the wonderful piece of equipment work.
It's
perfectly normal to want to do that, human beings are an inquisitive
lot. And
the marvels and mysteries of computers are in almost irresistable
lure, we just have to see how it all works. Just one little peek won't
hurt, and one little poke at this or that won't do any damage.
But when
that urge strikes you my advice to you is:
DON'T
DO IT!!!
As soon
as you open the box up you have voided the warranty that came with
the machine when you purchased it. Not only will you destroy your
warranty but it is quite possible that you will destroy your computer
at the same time.
Only
the other day I was speaking to a client on the phone who was wondering
why there was smoke coming from inside his computer. You may wonder
why someone would be asking a writer a question about their computer
but I've also done a little computer building just for a change of
pace.
Smoke
coming from a computer is always of interest to anyone so after a
little bit of prodding I managed to get the story from him.
He thought
that one of the cooling fans inside the computer was a bit noisy and
he didn't want to go through the hassle of unplugging everything and
taking it down to a computer technician to look at. So he opened the
box up and added just a "few drops" of oil to the fan.
Of course
as soon as he turned the computer on again the fan started up and
oil was blown all over the inside of his computer. Not only did the
computer begin to smoke as oil began landing on parts of the machine
that run at high temperatures but delicate parts that were never designed
to come in contact with oil got a good shower too.
The end
result is that he now has a very quiet fan because his computer no
longer works. In one moment of ignorance he damaged his computer to
the point where it will be a complete rebuild that will cost him hundreds
and hundreds of dollars.
He has
also lost valuable down-time because he relies heavily on his computer
for business too.
So please
learn from his lesson. If you think that there is something wrong
with the way your computer is operating take it to a qualified repairman
and let him assess the problem. He can advise you on any work that
needs to be done to it.
Computers
are not something that a home handyman can repair so please don't
even try to fix it yourself.
