Business Evolution

Back in 1998 when we took the first tentative steps to begin our own business we had a clear picture of where we wanted that business to go. Needless to say our business is now nothing like what we envisaged back then.

In just three years it evolved into something quite different and in 2001 when I gave up my day job we had another clear picture of where we wanted our evolved business to go.

I look back on that time with a wry inward smile because, even then, new opportunities were opening up that would take our business in a totally new direction and to a completely different state. If someone had suggested back then that we would be where we are today we would have laughed at them because what we are today was never in our wildest dreams back then.

Fortunately we have always been prepared to take on new challenges although, perhaps to be fair to Toni, I have to say that she has been more prepared to embrace change than I have.

By being open to change and being ready to meet the growing demand for services that we can provide we have continued to evolve and now we are on brink of moving into another area that is new to us.

But our story is not unique. Every business has the potential to evolve and to grow into something quite different to its original form. Sometimes that evolution can be positive for a business and sometimes not.

To make evolution work for you requires some caution on your part. It is not something that you should rush into blindly. Evolution doesn't bring instant success and you need to work at it. You need to have vision but you also need to be prepared to spend time investigating your new markets.

I guess that's where Toni and I fit together as a team. She has the vision and I have the Australian Army axiom of 'time spent in reconnaissance is never wasted' embedded in my brain. So sometimes we rush with hesitation.

Whatever your approach might be to new challenges always be prepared for them. Evolution and change does come and your success or failure as a business person will depend on how you face those challenges.
