| Small Business Tools Are you using the right tools for the job? One thing that almost every small business person knows and understands is that you simply must have the right tools for the job. It doesn’t matter what the job is, if you want to do it right then you have to have the tools that best suit the job. Or course we all know that and we live by that rule every day. If you’re a builder you’re going to have a wide assortment of tools but every one of them will right for the job. If you’re a writer like Tonia and me you will have a decent keyboard, a good computer and the right software for the job as well. But sometimes that rule can be forgotten when the ‘job’ is a little less obvious. Sure, I have all the correct tools to help me produce the text that our clients want and I use those tools to produce this site. After all this site does require words and I’ve go the tools to produce those words. But the type of website that these words appear on requires that I take some time every day just cross-referencing stuff and that takes time and I accepted that when I started this site. At the time I started the site I knew that there were tools that might have made my life a little easier but I ignored them for a variety of reasons. Even though Martin from Home Office Voice tried to persuade me to use those tools I declined – after all I’m an insensitive new-age luddite at heart. However, I did condescend to use that software on two other sites that I started and you can find them here and here. After a week of using that software on those two sites I began to see how dumb … ok … stupid I had been not to use the software for this site. The saving in time alone makes the software attractive and I’m finally going to start using it from the first of the month. I would have started it today but to preserve the archives I really need to have a changeover date that corresponds with the end of the month. So finally I’m going to start using the right tools for this job too. So do you always use the right tools for every job that is associated with your small business? And if you
aren’t using the right tools when are you going to stop wasting
time and money and start using the right tools? 26 Sep 2005 |
